What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition in which the airways of the lungs become inflamed, narrowed, and overly sensitive, making it difficult for a person to breathe freely. During an asthma episode, the muscles around the airways tighten, the lining of the air passages swell, and excess mucus is produced, leading to breathing difficulty.

Asthma affects children, adults, and elderly individuals. It may start early in life or develop later due to lifestyle, pollution, or repeated respiratory infections. Although it is a chronic condition, asthma can be well-managed, controlled, and significantly improved with the right treatment and lifestyle modifications.

Asthma symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people experience mild symptoms occasionally, while others face severe and frequent episodes.

  • hortness of breath
  • Wheezing sound while breathing
  • Tightness or heaviness in the chest
  • Persistent dry or wet cough
  • Difficulty breathing during exercise
  • Trouble sleeping due to breathlessness
  • Quick tiring during physical activity
  • Congestion or phlegm buildup
  • Feeling of choking or suffocation
  • Increased breathing difficulty during cold, dust, or pollution exposure

Symptoms

In Ayurveda, asthma is referred to as “Tamaka Shwasa,” a condition caused due to imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas along with low digestive fire (Agni). According to Ayurvedic science, the stability of breath depends on the harmonious functioning of Vata, while Kapha governs mucus and lubrication in the respiratory passages.

Ayurvedic Goals of Treatment

  • Clear excess mucus and congestion
  • Strengthen lungs and respiratory muscles
  • Improve air circulation in the lungs
  • Boost immunity and prevent recurrent infections
  • Balance Vata and Kapha
  • Improve digestion to reduce toxin formation
  • Enhance stamina and energy levels

How Ayurveda Explains Asthma

  1. Aggravated Vata – causes irregular breathing patterns, rapid breathing, and spasms of airways.
  2. Increased Kapha – causes mucus accumulation, congestion, heaviness in chest, and obstruction of air passages.
  3. Weak Digestive Fire (Agni) – leads to formation of Aama (toxins) which block channels of the lungs and reduce immunity.
  4. Low Ojas – decreases lung strength, making a person prone to repeated infections and attacks.

Ayurveda strongly emphasizes the role of diet and daily habits in controlling asthma. A healthy respiratory system is supported by proper digestion, clean and warm foods, and the avoidance of Kapha-aggravating items.
